1. It runs in the family
Если какое-то общее качество или способность наблюдается у некоторых членов семьи, то обычно говорят «It runs in the family», что-то вроде «Это у них/нас семейное».
My sister and I have curly hair. Some of my cousins have curly hair too. It runs in the family.

История идиомы:
Согласно одной из версий, слово mum появилось от того звука, который может издавать человек с закрытым ртом, - мычания. Впоследствии оно стало переводиться как «молчание» или восклицание «Тсс!», призывающее замолчать. Согласно второй версии, слово mum в среднеанглийском языке переводилось как «молчание». Произошло оно от слова mummer (мим): мим показывает пантомиму без единого звука, поэтому слово mum стало ассоциироваться с молчанием.

Есть две интересные версии происхождения этого выражения. Согласно первой из них, в XIX веке (а именно тогда появилась идиома) главным продуктом питания в большинстве семей был хлеб. Поэтому человека, который приносил домой деньги, кормил семью, называли «тот, кто выигрывает хлеб».
По второй версии, многим простым рабочим в XIX веке зачастую платили зарплату не деньгами, а хлебом. Поэтому человек, который больше всего зарабатывал, приносил домой больше всего хлеба.

Чаще всего это выражение употребляют по отношению к властной женщине, которая командует в семье и держит своего мужчину под каблуком.
История идиомы:
История происхождения этого выражения вполне очевидна. Давайте вернемся в те времена, когда женщины носили только платья и юбки и не надевали брюки. В то время мир принадлежал мужчинам: их уважали, они имели право голоса, они принимали все решения в семье и мире. С женским же мнением совершенно не считались. Вот с этих времен и пошел стереотип: человек носит штаны, значит, он мужчина, значит, он принимает все решения.
